Breast Lift Surgery With Dr Sellars
Breast lift surgery (Mastopexy) re-shapes and raises sagging breasts. The procedure involves re-sculpting of the breasts to remove any excess or stretched skin and, where required, re-alignment of the nipples. This leaves the breasts with a revitalised more youthful and uplifted appearance.
Breast lift surgery is the least complex of the breast surgeries with the quickest recovery times. Please call our office to book a personal consultation, where I can best advise you on your particular circumstances and needs.
Common Reasons for Considering Breast Lift Surgery
Breast changes can be the result of many different situations. Many women experience breast changes after pregnancies and breast feeding; considerable weight loss, or age. This results in a loss of firmness as breasts start to sag and can even seem to shrink in size. Breast lift surgery is different from breast enlargement and is mainly for women who are happy with the size of their breasts but wish to improve the overall shape and firmness.
The best way to determine if you have a “droop” in your breasts is to look in the mirror. Identifying where your nipples are located in relation to your breast will determine if you have a droop of mild, moderated or advanced nature.
- Mild droop – nipples are below the breast
- Moderate droop – nipples below crease line of the breast
- Advanced droop – nipples below crease line of breast and pointing downwards
Having a breast lift often increases self-confidence due to looking and feeling better both with and without clothes.
The surgery required will depend upon how “droopy” the breasts are. The procedure and incisions will be determined by the level of droop. Additionally, the breast lift procedure will review and correct any areola issues. Usually it is necessary to reduce the size of the areola as this can become enlarged over time.
I will discuss all of these aspects with you at your private consultation. Final size and shape of the breasts will also be discussed, so that you can have a good understanding of what to expect post surgery.
Breast Lift Surgery Information
The breast lift surgery itself will take about 1-2 hours with you returning home after a short post-operative recovery period.
The exact procedure will be discussed with you during our consultation. There are a number of incision patterns and techniques that may be used. The factors involved include:
- Breast size and shape
- The size and position of your areola
- The degree of breast sagging or droop
- Skin quality and elasticity as well as the amount of excess skin
There are four main steps to breast lift surgery:
Step 1 – Anaesthesia
The administration of medications to ensure your comfort during surgery. There are a few choices and these will be discussed with you at your consultation.
Step 2 – The Incision
Options here will be dicussed during your consultation.
Step 3 – The Reshaping Of Your Breasts
After the incisions have been made, the underlying breast tissue will be lifted and reshaped, improving overall contour and firmness. Additionally, repositioning of both the nipple and the areola back to their natural position will take place. Finally, if required, it is at this stage that enlarged areola reduction will occur by excising the skin at the perimeter and removal of excess breast skin.
Step 4 – Closing the Incisions
After all the breast reshaping has been completed and the excess skin removed, the remaining skin is then tightened as the incisions are closed.
As many of the incision lines as possible will be concealed by the natural contour of your breasts, however, other lines may be visible on the breast surface. Whilst incision lines are permanent, these will, on most cases, fade and significantly improve over time.
Breast Lift Surgery Recovery
As with any procedure, recovery time will be required. Most patients can often return to work within a few days and typically only mild discomfort is experienced during this time. I will conduct a full review at a predetermined time not long after surgery to ensure that everything is progressing as it should be. It is likely that you will be required to wear some form of support either in the form of an elastic bandage or a bra to minimise swelling and support your breasts during their healing. You will be provided with information and any specific instructions that you will require following your breast surgery to support your healing.
